Conversation Starters for Work Appropriate Topics

We don’t always think about the fact that our coworkers are people too. They may be different than us in some ways, but at the end of the day they’re just like us and probably have their own lives outside of work. It’s easy to forget this when you’re busy working away all day with no time to stop and talk with them, but if you take a moment before diving into your work you can use that as an opportunity to get to know one of your colleagues better.

Of course, not everyone is open to sharing personal details with others so any conversation starter you try must be used carefully. You don’t want it coming off as awkward or intrusive so always make sure everything you say remains respectful and appropriate for work conversations.

Here are some good conversation starters that work for office settings.

You can use these as icebreakers or to start a more in depth conversation with coworkers. They’re all pretty simple and straightforward so you shouldn’t have too much trouble using any of them the right way.

One thing I’ve found is that a lot of people appreciate a quick compliment now and then, especially from a coworker because it’s someone they see every day so it feels genuine rather than just being something to say at all times. This is another great opportunity to get closer to your colleague since everyone likes knowing they look nice! You can also ask about their outfit if they talk about it first- just be careful you don’t come off as weirdly interested in what they’re wearing. A good way to do this is by saying something like “I love that outfit, where did you get it? I’ve been thinking about buying a similar sweater myself!” If they share the information you can use it later if you want or just leave it at that and move on to another topic.

You don’t have to always stay stuck in the same kind of conversations- variety is important here! Try moving from talking about fashion to food or movies or hobbies. You can even transition into talking about events going on in your coworkers’ lives- the possibilities are endless! It might feel a little scary because you’re abandoning what feels safe but once you get started with this sort of conversation things will flow much more easily. Remember that it’s important to listen when somebody else is speaking- don’t just wait until they’re done and then start talking about your own interests.

It can help if you think of yourself as a journalist: there’s always new facts and information waiting to be discovered! You want to keep digging for more and never stop learning about the person sitting in front of you. These conversations show that you care about what others say and apply it to your life, which will make them like you even more.

Many people believe that they are productive at work simply because they are constantly busy doing things, but the truth is that there’s a difference between being busy and being productive. Being productive means getting important things done not just any kind of tasks. The most successful professionals know how to both be productive at work and be likeable. How can you do this? You have to use the right conversation starters to open genuine, authentic conversations in the office. I love all of the conversation starters I have already mentioned for trying with your office colleagues, but here are a few more.

1) When in doubt, ask questions .  Who doesn’t enjoy talking about themselves? You can use this as a way to learn more about your coworkers and it gives you a chance to show that you care. Everyone likes being heard and there’s no better way than asking someone questions and realizing they don’t know much about them. If you find an opportunity like this, go for it!

2)  Who is the most interesting person in the office ?  This is another great opening line because it will get people talking about each other which makes everyone feel good. It works best if you’re with at least one other person but it can also be used by yourself since you’re probably always around others at work anyway. Just walk up to different groups of people and ask this question: “Hey, who in here do you think is the most interesting person in this office?” You’ll have to have a little bit of confidence since it can feel weird when someone asks this for no reason, but people will love it.

3)  How are you feeling today ?  It’s important to show that you care about your coworkers because it makes them feel good! This is another question that can be used by yourself or with other people- just make sure you pay attention if somebody answers the question so you don’t ask them again! If they say things like “I’m fine” or “I’m ok” then move on to another topic.

One thing that might not seem obvious at first is learning how to end conversations because sometimes people are afraid that they’re going to say the wrong thing. There’s nothing wrong with this because it can be hard recognizing when it’s time to stop talking about a certain topic, but you should definitely try your best not to ignore somebody or leave them hanging! Saying something like “I’m glad we had this talk” or “I hope I see you soon!” is a great way to end things on a positive note.
