First date ideas: Go see some live standup comedy

Stand-up comedy is a fun way to get your first date started. First dates are always so awkward, but laughter is something that helps ease the tension and creates some solid conversation topics. Plus, if you’re both laughing about the same thing together, it can be an indicator of good chemistry.

Here are some suggestions of different shows in LA that might work for your first date:

The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail – If you’re new to comedy or just looking for a more traditional stand-up show, this one is great. Hosted by Kumail Nanjiani ( Silicon Valley , Portlandia ) and Jonah Ray ( The Nerdist podcast), they bring up three top comedians every Wednesday night at the Upright Citizens Brigade. The comedians usually talk about whatever is on their mind that week and provide insight into the world of stand-up comedy as a whole. (7518 W Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood)

The UCB Theatre – They host several different alternative shows at this venue. There’s ASSSSCAT , which is basically an improvised show based off of audience suggestions. There’s also Midnight Show , where four members from UCB compete to see who can do the best improv scene and win over the crowd with just one suggestion given by an audience member. If you want something even more off-the-wall, try Whiplash . It’s journal improv–improvised scenes based off what has been written in a journal entry. The UCB Theatre offers a lot to choose from that will definitely make for an entertaining show. (5919 Franklin Ave, Hollywood)

The Comedy Store – This big venue hosts great shows all week long and has been home to some of the biggest names in comedy such as Jerry Seinfeld, Robin Williams and Dave Chappelle. Admission is usually $5 or less and they even have little couches up front if you want to sit down while watching the comedians at work. (8433 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood)

There are other venues around town if none of these sound like what you’re looking for: Nerdist , Largo  and more . You can always search through different venues’ websites online to see what they have to offer this week.

The next step? Just pick a show and go! First dates are nerve-wracking, but hopefully you’ll both get some good laughs out of it. And as long as you both have fun on the date, that’s what’s important.

( End of article )  +++

That was a little more serious than I expected, but I guess it does cover a lot of bases for new people looking to try standup comedy for their first time. When writing an article like this, be prepared to produce something different based on who your audience is going to be. If your audience is newbies or experienced comedians then write about that, if they like hipster stuff or mainstream things, make sure to include that.

Whatever you do, don’t copy the above article word for word; it takes more than one go to turn an awesome idea into awesome words! Some people like to write the entire thing in their head first (that’s what I usually do,) while others like to jump right in and start typing. Neither is better than the other; they’re just different ways of doing things that some work better than others depending on your personal preference. The key here is that you allow yourself room to grow by continuing this process – writing isn’t done overnight so be patient with yourself and keep learning!

Remember: if you get stuck anywhere during this process, there are lots of awesome writers out there who would love to help you. Just leave me a comment down below and let me know where I can help you out! Or, if you’re looking for advice on making your next article even better, tell us what you were trying to do with this one so we can figure out how to make it work the next time around. Either way, I hope this has given you some valuable insight into becoming a writer – take these lessons and show everyone just how awesome of a writer you are!

EDIT: For anyone wondering why I didn’t include that ending quote in my original writing process, it’s because I actually wrote that line after finishing the blog post. Thanks again everyone for the feedback! This is definitely something I’ll be taking into account on future posts.

Be sure to check back for more stuff like this, and as always: happy writing!
