Romantic date ideas: Movies from your childhood night

Are you looking for some creative date ideas with your significant other? Romantic nights can include anything from cooking together, to going on a picnic, but why not try something you’re both familiar with. What better way to bond than by watching some of your favorite childhood movies?

Find some movies that had a big impact on both your childhoods, pop some popcorn, and enjoy your trip down memory lane. It will be a great way to connect on some common ground, and you might be surprised at all the things you don’t remember about your favorite childhood movies.

Here are 10 of my personal favorites:

1.) Labyrinth (1986) – Directed by Jim Henson

Starring David Bowie & Jennifer Connelly

For all the 90’s kids who grew up on Sesame Street, this film is guaranteed to take you back. And for those of us that enjoyed some of David Bowie’s earlier work, there are more than enough songs that will make it onto your playlist before the night is over.

2.) Matilda (1996) – Directed by Danny DeVito

Starring Mara Wilson & Danny DeVito

This movie makes me feel like an adult just thinking about it. I watched every single episode of every sitcom based off this movie growing up, so being able to watch it from start to finish would be a dream come true. Plus I have a secret crush on Danny Devito…for obvious reasons!

3.) Space Jam (1996) – Directed by Joe Pytka

Starring Michael Jordan & Bugs Bunny

And if you’re looking for a less sappy movie, this one is bound to be a hit. Who doesn’t love Looney Tunes and the greatest basketball player of all time? Be prepared to laugh your pants off, and I can almost guarantee that you will find something to relate to in this childhood favorite.

4.) Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) – Directed by Irwin Kershner

Starring Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher

My oh my…the epic journey of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and…uh…Lando Calrissian? I guess? Is it just me, or did everyone totally forget about Lando after the first Star Wars (1977)? I guess you could say that watching this movie will bring back memories of wondering what happened to all your favorite childhood characters.

5.) The NeverEnding Story (1984) – Directed by Wolfgang Petersen

Starring Noah Hathaway & Barret Oliver

I’m not sure there is any other movie on this list that gets more use out of imagination than this one does. If for some reason you haven’t seen it yet, put it at the top of your “to do” list ASAP! And be prepared to watch it over and over again because…well…it’s The NeverEnding Story.

6.) The Shawshank Redemption (1994) – Directed by Frank Darabont

Starring Tim Robbins & Morgan Freeman

If you made it through the first few minutes of this film without crying, I’m pretty sure you have no heart…at least that’s what I told myself when I watched it for the first time. Based on a short story by Stephen King, this movie is guaranteed to be an emotional roller coaster that will leave you with tons of questions long after the credits roll. And if nothing else, watch this to witness Morgan Freeman’s amazing performance…it’s truly Oscar-worthy!

7.) Beetlejuice (1988) – Directed by Tim Burton

Starring Michael Keaton & Winona Ryder

Speaking of movies that will give you the chills, Beetlejuice is a must-see. Everything about this movie feels otherworldly – from the ghosts to the sandworms to the whole world in general. If you can’t get enough of quirky characters and dark humor then this one is for you! And it’s impossible not to fall in love with everyone’s favorite bad ghost…Beetlejuice!

8.) The Lion King (1994) – Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff

Starring Matthew Broderick & Nathan Lane

Do I even need to explain why this movie made the list? Who doesn’t love the king of the jungle and his friends that make up this epic story? I could watch this movie all day long and never get tired of it. And if you’re not a fan of Disney animation there is always The Godfather (1972) or Goodfellas (1990) waiting for you to add to your list…

9.) Ghostbusters (1984) – Directed by Ivan Reitman

Starring Bill Murray & Dan Aykroyd

I should probably mention that these aren’t my favorite movies necessarily, but they are definitely movies that I watched over and over again when I was younger and would love to see them again today! Plus, who doesn’t love paranormal activity mixed with sci-fi plus comedy? Be prepared to laugh and cry while you watch this one because it’s definitely a roller coaster.

10.) Dazed and Confused (1993) – Directed by Richard Linklater

Starring Matthew McConaughey & Adam Goldberg

If movies from your childhood night isn’t your idea of a good time then what about hanging out with some old friends? For me, I was lucky enough to grow up in the 90’s when MTV actually played music video’s…which means that this movie will be perfect for our next movie from your childhood night! Just make sure to bring lots of booze, snacks and tissues…this one is going to leave us all heartbroken.

What are some of your favorite movies from your childhood night? Did I miss any that you would add to this list?
