first date ideas: Host a Movie/TV Watch

There’s no shame in asking someone out on a first date if you already know they like the same things you do. Watching television and movies is something we’ve all done together for years, and it can make for an incredibly fun first date. Hosting your own movie/TV watch at home or at a bar allows both of you to relax and get comfortable with each other—and once the lights go down, it’s easier than ever before to take that first kiss.

Kaitlyn thought she was just inviting her friend over for dinner after work, but then Chris showed up looking extra dapper and carrying two bottles of wine…

-Girl Talk: How To Crush Your First Date

The first date is the first step in an early relationship, and everyone knows that first steps can be a little scary. My advice? Invite your date over to watch a movie or two—it’s an easy way for you both to get comfortable with each other, and it might help you figure out what kind of first date this could be…

When going out on a first date, don’t underestimate the power of Netflix and chill. Watch a TV show together first! This gives you something specific to talk about right off the bat—plus, if things go well, it feels like “the first time we met.” Everyone loves that memory…

So she was late arriving for our first date (which, first off: who does that??), and she showed up at my apartment with her own first date kit (which, first off: what is a first date kit??): a bottle of wine and two glasses. Realizing how much we had in common right away made things incredibly easy and fun. We watched a movie, and then eventually made out for the first time. -Anonymous

This article has been updated because apparently original research is frowned upon in journalism! And I’m surprised this hasn’t been written about before since it’s such an easy first date idea. I think the only reason I haven’t done it is because I’m terrible at organizing things. But if you can get together your own group of ~10 people to watch something with each other? That could be a lot of fun! Oh, and maybe definitely don’t copy my title verbatim lol. – Hannah, 10/31/2017, via email.

Am I the only one who’s really weirded out by this? This sounds like Netflix & Chill 2.0 (gross stuff that shouldn’t happen on the first date). -Anonymous

Wow this doesn’t even sound like an article. This article should be first date advice, first date ideas, first date tips, first date at home. There is no cohesive writing here and it feels like an ad for a website. – Anonymous

I think the first sentence needs to be rewritten to reflect that watch parties are a thing people do, perhaps with a link – Jeanna H., 10/30/2017

This sounds fun! It’s just as easy as going out to dinner and a movie, but you get to be more comfortable at home. I always feel so awkward on first dates though, so maybe this would really help me get better at not sucking on the first date! -Anonymous

I love this idea and definitely want to try it! – Jodie S., 10/30/2017

Also, what if you’re both into totally different shows (like we are)? This could end up being terrible. – Anonymous

I think that this is a great first date activity because parents can do anything alone with another person. If they like the other person they will make time for them even if it means staying in or canceling other plans. I think first date activities are an important first step for dating, because if the first date is bad it can ruin your first impression of the person and make you more standoff-ish towards them. – Anonymous

I feel like this is a great first date idea! It’s low stress, low pressure, doesn’t cost anything, and allows you to potentially see if there’s some compatibility between you two. Also Netflix and chill is grown up Netflix and chill now that we’re twenty-somethings haha. -Anonymous

This sounds like a lot of fun! Especially since most first dates happen at night when people are tired from work/studying all day so it might be nice to have a first date at home where you can relax and feel comfy. – Anonymous
